Great Lake reduces the damage you take from all damage types. Against enemy attacks that deal more than one type of damage, Great Lake is very useful. It can simultaneously reduce both types of damage. In the main game, there aren't that many enemies that fall into this category. In PvP other players who wield weapons like the Burial Blade, Blade of Mercy, Tonitrus, or Logarius' Wheel will find their attacks to be less effective against you. Usually, though, it's better to use one of the more specific Lake Runes.
